MAKE SURE YOU'RE PREPARED. MAKE A KIT.
MAKE A KIT
We can’t stress the importance of being prepared enough. Having a disaster supply kit is the first step in being prepared in case of an emergency. Your supply kit should be a collection of basic items you may need in the event of an emergency, at home or on campus.
Following a serious event, you may need to survive on your own for an undetermined length of time. Your kit should be designed to keep you covered for at least 72 hours. Some of the basic items to include in your kit are:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio, a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries.
- Flashlight and extra batteries.
- First aid kit & whistle to signal for help.
- Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
- Wrench or pliers.
- Manual can opener for food.
- Local maps.
- Cell phone and computer chargers (inverter or solar charger are best).
Another incredibly important item to have on you is identification. Examples of ID include your Driver’s License, Passport or your UConn ID card.
Remember, we live in a seasonal climate. Make sure you have clothing ready that is appropriate for the season. Visit ready.gov/kit for more information on building a kit.
